Description

Time for some character design :D
So. For my MA thesis, which I'll be discussing in June, I've been reading two novels that appeared in form of "penny blood/feuilleton" in the XIX century. The novels are The Mysteries of London (in English) and The Mysteries of Naples (in Italian), and I have to compare them.
When I read the Mysteries of Naples, I found a kaleidoscope of characters, but inspiration struck me when I found these two villain sidekicks. I also translated their description into English because it needs to be read :)

"Don Diego Pincho was the new administrator of the riches belonging to the Massa Vitelli family.
We will say something about this man, whom we will find again throughout this work.
(...)
Don Diego Pincho was a fifty-five-year-old man, already white of hair: long, ashen face, teeth arranged like a halftone scale,
ostrich neck made way longer by some huge white neckties in which he used to wrap or squeeze it, and from which two windmill-blade-shaped shirt collars came out.
As for the eyes, there was some mathematical oddity in the reflection cone: everything he posed his pupils on seemed to avoid their contact.
He was a bachelor. Until his fifties this "irregularity" of nature had never felt any love. There are eunuch souls as well as eunuch bodies.
To don Diego, women had been object of mere luxury, German dolls, toys and diversions. What a difference from his predecessor!
Don Diego had nobler senses: money was his god.
The oblong man could not accept that one could busy himself in other things than finding a way to collect the largest amount of metal minted with the picture of the legitimate sovereign. Any purpose other than this he considered being foolish and puerile.
From his fifties on, a love fancy began to snake in his meanders... For the first time he looked into a mirror, and the image must not have been gratifying, inasmuch as that face was unappealing even to himself. The soul had splattered some of its filth on it.
So don Diego, who began to melt at the sight of women, thought it was necessary to correct the arithmetic of nature and do with age the exact opposite of what he used to do with his money: he carefully shaved everyday, blackened his hair and put face powder on.
Nature burst into laughter because he had defeated her in the intention of making him ugly.
With all this, he succeeded in interesting a woman.
(...)
Yes folks, don Diego, who had kept the flower of his virginity untouched until the half-century, got caught by a maid with lumpy curves (...)
Don Diego sank into love-making with this huge female bestiality.
It frequently happens.
(...)
He became his own maid's lover, but this did not prevent our don Diego from making love to money, his old passion. (...)
The maid made up her reasoning.
"This man is mine" she said to herself. "I represent the whole female sex to him; he cannot flee from me. My sweet Diego is rich, he has no children, and luckily, he cannot have any... I may be his sole heir... He is fifty, I am thirty. Twenty years are something. Therefore, it is necessary to deny access to this house to anybody, especially if that anybody wears a skirt. Eating, scrubbing and... loving, it is all a matter of starting, as they say; and straight-edges are the first to get drunk".
Once she had made up her mind in this way, which did not lack of a point, Maria (this was the maid's name) became the absolute mistress of don Diego's house, but not as well of his wallet, which remained perfectly closed as it was before.
The old man was oh so effusive to his plump Maria; but it was forbidden to touch him on the weak side. The maid had understood it (...)
Being things as they were, Maria took such a lucky chance that, except the status of wife, everything was given to her by the affectionate bachelor.
(...)
Donna Maria stole all along the line, but always in such a way that her dear judge would be delighted by her good housekeeping.
Coy smiles, caresses, "my love", "my sweetheart", "my sweetie pie" and other similar oh so tender expressions grew day after day together with the wrinkles on the face of justice, who was all melted in affection.
Anybody who ended up at the judge's house to talk with him about their business, fist of all had to talk with donna Maria, who would let in this or that one, depending on her likings or dislikings."

That was it. It made me laugh xDDD I guess I made don Diego a lot more handsome than how the author had intended him. As for donna Maria, same thing: surely the author had imagined her looking more like an ugly fat bitch, but I chose to make her somewhat cute for two reasons: she is the maid, but also the whore- ehm... concubine, the sexual element in the duo. And a villain is even more interesting when s/he doesn't look like a villain at first sight. Besides, these two are supposed to be funny villains.
Want to know their end? :D
PS. "Don" and "donna" are respectively the Italian for "Sir" and "Dame" or "Lord" and "Lady".
